Course:            Spanish Level I

Student
Materials:         Students are responsible for bringing their  notebook, folder with handouts, and pen or pencil.
                        The class text is "Ven Conmigo " Level 1.

Activities:          Students will continue their use of Spanish by focusing on listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and role-playing.  Our projected goal is to work with and expand knowledge acquired in the first year or two years of the Spanish program at Carusi.  Topics to be considered are listed on the scope and sequence page.

Homework:      Homework is given periodically and is due the following class period.  When there is no written homework, students need to take the opportunity to practice vocabulary words and review past assignments.

Grading:           Quizzes and test are given with written and oral parts. Make up test may be      taken during the students MAC period or following class period.  Test, quizzes, homework, and class participation are all taken into consideration for grading purposes.

The Carusi Middle School has adapted its World Language Curriculum to the state’s new Framework for language learning. Standards and Benchmarks are linked to our District’s website.  Our main goal is to develop communicative and cultural competence in a progressive fashion. Learning a new language is now considered to be one of the hallmarks of a well-educated citizen in the State of New Jersey.

Results of research on children who study a foreign language have shown that these students:

¨      achieve expected gains and have even higher scores on standardized test in reading , language, arts, and mathematics than those who have not;

¨      show greater cognitive development in such areas as mental flexibility, creativity, divergent thinking, and higher-order thinking skills;

¨      have an improved self-concept and sense of achievement in school;

¨      can transfer their language learning in subsequent foreign language study in high school and college.
