Mrs. Malko’s Course Expectations

Health and Wellness Education

Welcome to Health and Wellness Education. In this course you will have approximately 21 classes that will help you gain the knowledge and skills necessary for successful living. You will be encouraged to use your knowledge to take responsibility for your own lives by acting conscientiously in the present and by establishing positive health practices that will support and enhance lifelong wellness.

Students in my classes must be active learners. In other words, they must take a major role in the learning process in the following manner:

Have a pencil, pen, health folder with pockets and lined paper in every class

Be involved and be on task in both individual and group activities

Keep an orderly and up to date folder/notebook with all papers and handouts (bring to every class)

Have a reliable ‘buddy’ from your class that you can call and ask about any missed assignments (since we only have class 2-3 times a week, this is imperative)

Practice skills that pertain to communicating, listening, participating and common courtesy

Evaluation of students will be done using methods such as:

Class participation – be involved in class discussion as well as practice the skills that go with class activities

Role-play – since this class will give you the tools to make decisions and become a responsible citizen in your community, we will practice these techniques so that you will be comfortable with them in a real situation

Written evaluations – a few written tests and quizzes will be given

Homework – most of our work will be done in class but some homework is given as a part of preparation for the next class or as an evaluation of what was done in the previous class

Presentations – students will be asked to orally present findings from group work, individual work or from their own common knowledge

Reassessment Policy: Students may reassess any assignment or evaluation only after the original assignment or evaluation has been handed in. Also, before reassessment occurs, a parent or guardian must sign the original assignment or evaluation. The student is responsible to make arrangements with the teacher to reassess.

Cherry Hill Standards and Benchmarks: A comprehensive list of all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade standards and benchmarks for Health class can be found on the Cherry Hill School District website.
