VOLLEYBALL
STUDY GUIDE & RUBRIC
A.
SKILLS:1. Bump or forearm Pass = Used when receiving the serve. Performed by having the hands together and pointing toward the floor. The forearms are used to contact the ball. Height and accuracy of the pass come from the bent knees and straight arms.
2. Set or overhear pass: Used to set the ball to another player, usually forward. Executed by having both hands above the head (making a window), fingertips slightly bent and body in the ready position (knees bent, one foot slightly forward in front of the other, and feet shoulder width apart).
3. Serve = Underhand – The serve is executed with the hand open using the heel of the palm to strike the volleyball.
B. SERVICE RULES:
1. The right back player starts the game by serving the ball from behind the end line.
2. The server is allowed only one serve which must clear the net and land within the opponents boundary lines (sidelines and end line).
3. Each server serves the ball until a "side out" is called.
4. A side out gives the non-serving team the opportunity to serve the ball.
5. Players must rotate positions before serving.
6. Teams change courts at the end of the game.
7. Balls that touch the court lines are good.
C. PLAYING THE BALL:
After the ball has been served, players on both sides must abide by the following rules:
1. Any player who receives the ball is allowed one volley (hit) over the net or to another teammate.
2. The ball may not be volleyed (hit) more than three times by a team before it is sent over the net.
3. A ball that hits the net on the return and falls into the opponent’s court is a fair ball.
4. A ball, other than a serve, which touches the net and drops over is still in play.
5. The ball must be hit using a bump, set, dig, block, or spike (with a closed hand). No slaps, lifts, or thrown passes allowed.
6. The ball must be hit twice before going back over the net (Beck rule).
7. The serve MUST be received with a BUMP or FOREARM pass (Beck rule).
D. VIOLATIONS:
If the serving team commits any of the following violations, the serve is lost. This is called a "side out". If one is committed by the receiving team, the serving team is awarded one point.
1. Hitting the ball out of boundary lines, into the ceiling or lights,
and/or into the walls.
2. Catching, slapping or holding the ball.
3. Touching the net with the hands.
4. Going under the net and crossing the center line.
5. Serving out of turn.
6. Not rotating properly.
E. SCORING:
1. Only the serving team can score points.
2. The team to reach fifteen (15) points with a two- (2) point lead wins the match.
