Enduring Understandings Related to Course:
- Civilizations arise out of the human need to survive and to improve the
quality of their life.
- Humans communicate their stories, beliefs and values in various ways.
- As humans and civilizations evolve, patterns develop.
- Organization of student learning is key to gathering, processing,
analyzing, synthesizing information, and communicating understandings of
that information.
Essential Questions Related to the Course:
- How does man explain his world?
- What do humans need to survive?
- How do we prioritize our needs?
- What patterns develop as man changes his world?
- How does man’s need to create change the structure of society?
- How does man’s belief system affect his ability to create?
- How did man change civilization to institute control and create fairness and
equality
These
topics incorporate the following Life Skills:

Understanding and applying basic principles of logic and reasoning
- Applying
appropriate decision making and problem solving techniques

Contributing positively to the overall effort and positive direction of a
group
- Working
well with others who are different

Demonstrating leadership skills

Demonstrating responsible and respectful behavior
- Using
various information sources including those of a technical nature
- Using
technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote
creativity
- Using
information accurately and creatively
Meeting Different Needs:
- Using techniques to increase the child’s metacognition -(a child’s
ability to understand how he/she learns)
- Using techniques that present material in a variety of formats (learning
styles, multiple intelligences, using varied groupings of individuals,
partners, small groups, whole class, whole house) with a variety of ways for
the student to respond
- Using fair and credible evaluations that assess the child in a myriad of
formats
- Using timing of assessments to the advantage of the child
- Offering extra help after school to enable all students to meet the
standards (re-teaching, re-testing, alternate assessments, modified
assessments)
- Providing parents with the tools to help their children ( house web site,
extensive use of homework planner as a communication device)
Student Materials required: pen and pencil, colored pencils, 2-pocket
folders with brads
