PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS:

For a week and a half in January and February, Carusi students jumped rope using short, long, and double-dutch ropes.  In addition to learning all kinds of rope tricks, the students participated in contests, listened to “Jock Jams,” won “Jump Juices” and raised money for the American Heart Association.

The emphasis for the activity was increasing awareness about heart disease and stressing the value of prolonged, moderate cardio-vascular activity.  During the week of heart awareness, students were encouraged to ask neighbors and family members for donations to the American Heart Association.  Carusi eclipsed the $3000 mark for the first time since 1998 and more than double last years’ total.  Our seventh graders alone raised just under $1000 and our six graders topped $1920!  The eighth grade also raised a respectable $149.  In all, 72 students turned in contribution envelopes. Just imagine if the other 900 Carusi students had each brought back their envelope with one dollar!  Maybe next year.

Our “Top Ten” fund-raisers were:

                             1.) Samantha News, Grade 7, $226

                             2.) Laura Flanagan, Grade 7, $170

3.) Gery Batista, Grade 6, $130

4.) Marlee Cerota, Grade 6, $125

5.) Kim Choi, Grade 6, $116

6.) Meredith Callahan, Grade 6, $115

7.) Rebecca Malaczewski, Grade 6, $110

                             8.) Kate Creelman, Grade 7, $100

                             9.) Jamie Myers, Grade 6, $80

                             9.) Sam Cheafsky, Grade 6, $80

Special thanks to these students and to their parents who supported our community service project.  Again, thanks to all participants and contributors.
