Health Education: 2006 – 2007
Philosophy:
A comprehensive health education will facilitate all students’ abilities to learn and develop skills and concepts that will enhance life-long social, emotional and physical wellness. I expect each student to be an active participant and embrace new and challenging topics as opportunities to learn and grow from within. Each student must take responsibility for his/her individual and group learning experiences. I look forward to enriching each student’s educational experience so that he/she may achieve his or her personal best.Standards: Our curriculum encompasses the (4) New Jersey Health Education Standards.
7.1 All students will achieve optimal wellness by learning and applying health promotion concepts and skills.
7.2 All students will achieve optimal wellness by learning and applying health-enhancing life skills.
7.3 All students will achieve optimal wellness by learning and applying substance abuse prevention concepts and skills.
7.4 All students will achieve optimal wellness by learning and applying concepts and skills that support healthy sexuality and positive personal relationships.
The curriculum will also incorporate the Principles of Learning, Life Skills Standards and Character Education Standards. Critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills will be utilized in every lesson.
Assessment: Students will be evaluated throughout their learning experience using a variety of methods such as self-evaluation/reflection, oral participation and presentation, written evaluations, current health articles and cooperative group work. Reassessment will be provided when a student needs additional opportunities to demonstrate proficiency based upon their learning style, abilities, experiences and needs. Rubrics, a set of scoring guidelines for evaluating student work, will be utilized to enable all learners to know and understand what they need to do to meet and exceed expectations and standards.
Responsibilities: Students are required to bring a Health folder with lined paper as well as a writing tool to each class. Every student must have a classroom partner to communicate with for any missed work due to absence. This is imperative since we meet 2-3 times per week, 20 days per marking period.
